Other fun stuff as you explore Portland:

Burnside Ave. divides North from South, and the Willamette River divides East from West. SW, for example, is south of Burnside and west of the river. We live in SE and the wedding location is in SW. The shopping districts of Downtown, Nob Hill and The Pearl District span close-in SW and NW.

Food Carts to watch for (locations vary)

Free Concerts and Outdoor Movies in Portland Parks (locations vary)

Gabriel Park PlaygroundPortland’s newest inclusive playground, a must-see for kids! SW

Westmoreland Park – very cool naturescape playground, paths for strolling, nutria
and beaver viewing at dusk, petanque club  SE

Portland Japanese Garden , Hoyt Arboretum and the International Test Rose Garden

SW Hills, in Washington Park (the Zoo is also here)

Lan Su Chinese Garden – NW

Elk Rock Garden/The Bishop’s Close

-peaceful place to stroll and view the river, between Portland and Lake Oswego, SW

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden -in Eastmoreland, near Sellwood, lovely kid-friendly
place to walk, SE

Powell’s Bookstoreworld’s largest independent bookstore, NW (on Burnside and 10th)

Wailua Shaved Ice – near Powell’s, you might not find it by accident so here’s the link. 🙂 SW

McMenamin’s Live Music Eventsvarious locations around Portland

Chamber Music Northwest – Portland Summer Festival

Portland Farmer’s Market at Portland State University on Saturday morning, SW

Sauvie Island is the place to go for U-pick farms, bird watching, or the nude
beach 🙂 Topaz Farm has animals for kids and a fantastic farm stand with lots of local
gourmet items, homemade pastry and ice cream, beer/cider, a grill and grab-and-go
picnic items if you want to pick up lunch before heading out for a walk or hike.

A short kid-friendly hike with a few picnic benches is the Wapato Access Greenway Loop, and it’s very close to Sauvie Island Farms for berry picking.  A longer but flat and picturesque hike is the Warrior Point Lighthouse Trail. Parts can be flooded if the water level is high and you’ll want to be sure you know what stinging nettle looks like before heading out. You’ll also need to purchase a day pass to park at one of the local stores, so you can ask them if it’s accessible!

Forest Park 5,200 acre park in the city, with many hikes, NW

Going to the Gorge?

The Columbia Gorge is one of the most beautiful locations on the west coast so is worth the trek if you have a full day and a car. Angel’s Rest is one of our favorite hikes, or for an easier/shorter hike, try Horsetail Falls. Or maybe a day trip to Hood River! You can drive the Fruit Loop for fresh fruit, wine and cider. The Washington side is great, too–you can drive through the Gorge to hike Catherine Creek (where our save-the-date photo was taken) and have lunch at the ultra-delicious White Salmon Baking Co.
